this forma is called friburgensis with the long petals. It appears from time to time everywhere. I think, it is a form of atavism.
I am interested if the plant comes out again next year. Mostly this species disappears after flowering.
I only know Liparis loeselii on wet limy sand not on plain washed sand
Can i prolong the life of the apifera by cutting the flowers when they begin forming seeds? I take it it is due to the forming of seeds that the plant disappeares? I have no use for the seeds as i cant sow them. Don't have the equipment. I also just started with the terrestrial hobby 2 years ago (pot culture that is) so i am still experimenting a lot. Especially with watering and soils. If that goes well than sowing might be the next challenge.
the liparis. Can you suggest a potting media that wil work? I have gone with washed sand because i know they thrive in dune pans but i have actually never seen it in a natural environment so can't rely on that knowledge unfortunatly.
now it is rooted in the sand with the moss surrounding the plant. Last winter i kept it just damp. In the summer it is placed in the pond on top of a container with marsh plants so its feet are always wet.
I think You can prolong the life of apifera by cutting the flower. I didn't test it but it works on many other plants.
On the other hand You have a good chance that apifera germinates by itself if there is seed around because appropriate germinating fungi for this species are around at many places.
I think, Your technique for L. loeselii fits already but You can add a little bit limy material

because i got a bit nervous about the apifera i couldnt resist checking the bulb. It stil has a nice bulb which i exspect wil flower next year.
I only had it produce 1 seedcapsule because of fear of it disappearing. The rest of the flowers i removed after the flower shriveled.
next year i think the goal is to have it produce 2 bulbs and no flowering.
Bertold,
I hadn't mentioned it yet but the apifera is doing fine.
Last year i let it flower but not let it build seeds. Perhaps that's the trick keeping them longer lived.
This year i have some species that are not doing well. They are develloping yellow leafs.
I have taken some out of the pots and almost no roots have been formed. Only half a cm or so.
Otherwise they look fine. Bulbs are forming and look good. I think i may have kept them a bit to dry during early state develloping of the roots.

Normally it is an subsurface infection. The root tips or other part of the skin are black. If there is no black part You can be lucky. But most important are healthy new bulbs
Hi Denny,
very nice plants. What soil are you using? Do you fertilize?
