Wie ist es mit eigener Herstellung? Wozu willst du es verwenden? Vielleicht gibt es ja eine Alternative.

When ordering BM1 or BM2 the storage temperature is given between 2-8°C.
What component in the medium goes "bad" when it's kept above 8°C?
Is it because of the amino acids included?

I just received an answer from Phygenera. It's because of the added biotin.
"L-Glutamine and Glycin should be stable @RT, the recommended storage temperature for BM has been set to the temp for biotin. Data for possible degradation of this compound in the dry mixture is not available. It is more of a preventive measure.
Highest degradation rate of organic compounds usually is reached during autoclaving."
I knew that the recommend storage temperature is for the included vitamins, but I was not aware is was specifically for the biotin.

I have 1 bottle of BM1 medium and 1 bottle of BM2 medium.
They haven't been used for a while and have been sitting around 20°C for around 2 years :-D .
I wonder if they are still able to germinate orchid seeds or should I just throw them away.

Have the following seeds at the moment:
D.incarnata
D.purpurella
D.ochroleuca (not sure about this, might be something else)
O.apifera
A.morio
G.repens
L.loeselii
G.conopsea
Will sterilize some seeds with 2.5% Ca(ClO)2 and see what grows :thumb .
I have no data about reducing of special components in BM1 by time. So test is the best way to check.

I have made bm1 as a stock solution and keep it in the fridge. I just have to add sugar and agar to the medium. The medium is stored for max. 6 years, I never had any problems.
Somes years back I recieved medium where the vitamins where added as a liquid solution. You can only store that for a short time because the added moist in the medium creates ideal situation for fungi and microbes to thrive.

So, the first seeds are germinating.
Big surprise was that BM1 seems to be very good for Goodyera repens germination.
All seeds were sterilized in 2.5% Ca(ClO)2 solution.
So far on BM1 the following seeds have germinated:
D.incarnata
D.purpurella
D.ochroleuca
G.repens
On BM2:
D.incarnata
D.purpurella
D.ochroleuca
It seems that BM1 is better for germinating dactylorhiza species.
While the dactylorhiza protocorms are forming on both mediums, the protocorms on BM1 already have rhizoids. On BM2 they are just "balls".
Dactylorhiza seeds were sterilized for 12min, goodyera seeds for 5min.

The big difference between BM-1 and BM-2 is that BM-1 contains ammonium nitrate, which is replaced by casein hydrolysate in BM-2.
The BM-2 also contains BAP (0,2mg/l).
It may be that various orchids cannot utilize casein hydrolysate in the same way as ammonium nitrate.

Cypripedium don´t like ammonium nitrate.
Nearly al of them germinate but die very fast with ammonium nitrate.
